Who is eligible for UGC NET Commerce?

NET (National Eligibility Test), conducted by the NTA (National Testing Agency), is one of the highly competitive qualifying exams. All candidates who wish to become Assistant Professors in Universities and Colleges and have completed Commerce post-graduation from a recognized university or institute can start the UGC NET Commerce 2024 application process.

The nationality requirement for the UGC NET Commerce exam is:-

All Indian citizens who have completed postgraduate graduation in Commerce from a college or university recognized by the Government of India can apply for the UGC NET Commerce exam.

Candidates from other countries who have completed post-graduation from a recognized university or college in India can apply for the UGC NET Commerce exam.

All Indian citizens who have completed a Masters in Commerce from a recognized foreign institution or university can apply for the UGC NET Commerce exam.

All foreign candidates pursuing a Master’s degree in any recognized international university or college can apply for the UGC NET Commerce exam.

Education background

Candidates who want to apply for the UGC NET Commerce exam required the following educational qualifications.

All candidates wishing to apply for the examination should possess a Master’s degree in Commerce from a recognized university with an aggregate score of at least 55%.

However, there can be a 5% relaxation in the marks for candidates of Scheduled Castes (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Transgenders, People with Disabilities (PwD).

All interested candidates must have a Master of Commerce certificate from a recognized university to apply for the UGC NET Commerce exam.

Applicants pursuing their final year of Master’s degree or those who have completed their final year exam and are waiting for the result can also apply for the UGC NET Commerce exam.

All final-year candidates who have passed the UGC NET Commerce examination and are qualified should achieve the percentage prescribed by the NTA (National Testing Agency) to get the qualification certificate.

Further, these aspirants who have appeared or are waiting for the results should complete their Master’s degree with the stipulated percentage within two years from the date of declaration of UGC NET Commerce Exam Result 2023-24, failing which they will be deemed disqualified.

NTA (National Testing Agency) provides a 5% mark relaxation to candidates completing their PhD. Master’s degree obtained on or before September 19, 1991

Age

Candidates must meet the following age criteria to apply for UGC NET exam.

Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

The JRF does not stipulate a minimum age limit, but from January 1, 2022, the maximum age shall not exceed 31 years, i.e. all candidates pursuing a Master in Commerce from a recognized university or institution can apply for examination subjects up to the maximum age limit. However, according to regulations, there is a certain relaxation in age.

As per Government regulations, candidates from Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), Physically Disabled, Other Backward Classes (OBC) and women candidates are given a grace period of 5 years.

Aspirants who have researched after graduation can enjoy age relaxation equal to their time on research.

Age relaxation of 3 years is allowed for all applicants possessing an LLM degree from a recognized university or institution.

Age relaxation for the UGC NET JRF is mentioned below:-

  • Women Candidates of All Categories – 5
  • Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) -5
  • Other Backward Classes (OBC), Transgender – 5

Assistant Professor

There is no minimum and maximum age limit for the assistant professor and all the aspirants who have completed their Post Graduation in Commerce from a recognized institute or university can apply for the exam for Assistant Professor

Number of Attempts for UGC NET Commerce Exam

Assistant Professor

There are no restrictions and limited attempts for the assistant professor of the UGC NET Commerce exam as per the NTA (National Testing Agency),i.e, candidates who have met the educational qualifications can apply for the UGC NET Commerce Assistant Professor any number of times

Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

Aspirants who want to apply for the UGC NET Commerce JRF can write the exam 3 times only and not allowed to apply after that

All the aspirants who have finished Master’s in Commerce with a requisite percentage from a recognized university or institute and are below the age of 31 years can write the UGC NET Commerce exam for JRF three times.

UGC NET Commerce Exam Eligibility 2024 – Exemptions

All the candidates who have passed the CSIR JRF or the UGC NET before 1989 are ineligible to apply for the UGC NET Commerce exam 2024.

According to the regulations of the UGC, 2009, candidates who have Ph.D. degree are ineligible for applying.

All the aspiring candidates who have cleared the eligibility test conducted by the states, i.e, SET before June 2002 are not eligible to apply for the UGC NET exam 2024 but eligible for applying for the vacancies of assistant professors across the country.

All the candidates who have cleared the SET conducted by the states after June 2002 are only eligible to apply for the Assistant Professor posts in their respective states.
