Who is eligible for CSIR UGC

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) provide fellowships to encourage young talent to take up research careers in science and technology.

Known as the CSIR-UGC NET exam, it is a prestigious fellowship program for those looking to pursue a PhD or undertake research after post graduation.

Eligibility Criteria for CSIR UGC

The main eligibility criteria set by CSIR-UGC NET are:

Educational Qualification

To be eligible, candidates must have a Master’s degree in science or a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology from a recognized university or institute. The percentage criteria for the general/OBC category is 55% marks, while it is 50% for SC/ST/PWD candidates.

Subjects Allowed

Master’s degree holders from only science subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, etc. are eligible.

Engineering stream students should have M.Sc./M.Sc.(Tech) or B.E/B.Tech/B.Pharm degrees in textiles, metallurgy, aerospace, chemicals, polymers, biological sciences, food technologies, etc.

Age Limit

General/OBC category candidates should be below 28 years as of 1st January of that calendar year. The age limit for SC/ST/PWD/women candidates is relaxed by five years.

Nationality

Only Indian citizens are eligible for these prestigious CSIR fellowships. Overseas citizens of India (OCI) or Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) do not qualify.

Qualifying Exam:     

To avail of a Junior Research Fellowship & eligibility for a Lectureship, candidates must crack the CSIR UGC NET exam held twice a year in June and December. The MCQ-based test only covers subjects from the science stream, held in two papers.

Employment Status

Candidates should not hold any position in govt/private organizations or not draw any other fellowship at the time of applying for CSIR JRF/LS. Part-time students who don’t get a regular salary but only an honorarium/stipend are exempted.

Tenure of Fellowship

If selected, JRF awardees will get the fellowship for two years only to work on research projects for their PhD. An extension of 2 more years may be granted, bringing the total tenure up to 4 years based on annual progress reports.

Number of Attempts

There is no limit on attempts for the CSIR NET exam. Candidates can keep appearing until the upper age limit to try to qualify. But JRF fellowship is provided only once per candidate.

Reservation/Relaxation Categories

As per govt rules, 15%, 7.5% and 3% reservation benefits in qualifying criteria are extended to SC/ST/OBC and Differently Abled candidates. Also, five- and 10-year relaxations in upper age limits are given to SC/ST/OBC/Women and Differently Abled candidates, respectively.

Documents Required for Application

Candidates have to provide the following documents along with the online application:

  • Scanned Photo
  • Scanned Signature
  • Proof of Date of Birth (Matriculation certificate)
  • Masters/Bachelor mark sheets
  • SC/ST/OBC/PWD Certificates, if applicable
  • Scanned copies of published papers, if any

Benefits Offered

Those qualifying CSIR NET JRF will be entitled to:

  • Monthly stipend of ₹31,000 for initial 2 years + HRA as applicable
  • Annual research grant of ₹20,000 for essential equipment
  • Contingency grant of ₹10,000 is provided annually
  • Total tenure of 5 years as SRF on clearing review after two years

Apart from the excellent stipend amount, the tag of clearing CSIR NET JRF holds high value when applying for research positions in premier institutes or academic jobs in future.
