The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureship and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. The CSIR NET exam is conducted twice yearly, in June and December.
CSIR NET Application Form & Submission Dates
The CSIR NET application form is released online on csirnet.nta.nic.in. The application window remains open for about a month. The application window for the June 2023 session was open from January 10, 2023, till February 7, 2023.
Candidates must register on the portal and fill out the application form by providing details like personal information, contact information, qualification details and test centre choice. The application fee payment can be made online via credit/debit card, net banking, or UPI.
Eligibility Criteria
The main eligibility criteria to apply for CSIR NET are:
The candidate should have an M.Sc or equivalent degree with a minimum of 55% marks for General/OBC candidates and 50% for SC/ST/PwD candidates. Candidates in their final year can also apply.
- E/B.Tech degree holders in Engineering/Technology with 55% marks (50% for reserved)
- Knowledge of computer applications, Data Interpretation and Aptitude is mandatory.
- There is no upper age limit to apply for CSIR NET. Candidates already qualified for UGC NET in previous years are also eligible to apply.
Syllabus & Exam Pattern
The CSIR NET exam consists of three parts:
Part A – General Aptitude (Compulsory)
This section tests the candidates’ logical & analytical thinking skills, reasoning, general awareness and aptitude and consists of 60 multiple-choice questions of 2 marks each.
Part B – Subject Paper
This paper tests the candidates’ expertise in their chosen subject/discipline. There are 60 multiple choice questions of 2 marks each based on the syllabus of subjects like Chemical Sciences, Earth Science, Life Sciences, Mathematical Science, Physical Science, etc.
Part C – Amis Irrelevant Component
This part of the questions is not used for evaluation but only for analysis. Candidates have to attempt all questions.
The total duration of the CSIR NET exam is 3 hours. All the questions carry equal marks. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
Exam Dates
The CSIR NET June 2023 exam date is June 18, 2023. It will be conducted as per the following schedule:
- Part A: General Aptitude – 9.00 AM to 10.00 AM
- Part B: Subject Paper – 10.15 AM to 12.15 PM
- Part C: Amis – 12.30 PM to 1.30 PM
The exam date and shift details will be intimated to candidates through the admit card, which will be released on csirnet.nta.nic.in.
Seats and Reservation Policy
A total of 2767 Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) seats are awarded to qualifying candidates. The reservation policy for CSIR NET is as follows:
- 15% of the seats are reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
- 5% seats for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates
- 27% seats for Other Backward Classes candidates belonging to the “non-creamy layer”
- 10% of seats are reserved for Persons with Disabilities (PwD)
- Apart from JRF, candidates also qualify for lecturer/assistant professor positions in colleges and universities across India.
Results & Cutoff Marks
The results for CSIR NET are declared as a merit list based on cutoff marks on the NTA website. Only candidates securing marks greater than or equal to the cutoff qualify for JRF and Lectureship.
In the December 2022 session, the cutoff marks were 71 for the General category and 58.25 for the SC/ST/OBC/EWS category to qualify for JRF & Eligibility for Lectureship.
Separate cutoffs are released for candidates appearing from the engineering stream (gate-qualified candidates), which is usually much lower than the expected cutoff.
Counseling & Merit List
After the CSIR NET result declaration, a standard merit list is prepared stream-wise and category-wise based on the total marks secured by candidates. The list consists of candidates who have qualified for JRF and are eligible for the fellowship as per marks and number of seats available. Based on the CSIR NET merit list, qualified candidates are called for document verification and a counseling process for granting fellowship.
